Why we work this way

Our leadership has 16–18 years of experience each in marine insurance. Two of our founders grew up in seafaring families and saw first-hand what a delayed claim means for a crew waiting on a payout. We built Surety Marine around that experience: a specialist underwriter with a clear line of underwriting authority, and a claims process with published response times.

How we assess risk

Risk-as-a-Service

Every policy includes access to a cloud-based platform that tracks operational liabilities continuously and delivers real-time risk alerts — not a one-off assessment at renewal.

AI-assisted underwriting

Models continuously score regional and counterparty stability, surface emerging exposures as conditions change — a sanctions regime, a conflict zone, a corridor that turns riskier than it was last quarter — and set out what each alternative means for cover.

Routing and operational decisions stay the client’s and the master’s call; ours is making sure the underwriting position is priced against the current risk picture. An underwriter reviews every model output, and every conclusion passes a two-person check before it’s final.

Our underwriting is supported by continuous, satellite-based monitoring of vessel movements and port risk conditions, OSINT-based routing intelligence, and partner performance analysis — so the underwriting view reflects current conditions, not just what was true at last renewal.

Clients who implement risk-reducing measures, such as acting on survey recommendations, are rewarded with premium credits or extended cover. For Sureties & Bonds submissions, automated document review helps our team work through supporting paperwork faster.

Financial security

Our reinsurance programme provides USD 50 million of cover (USD 45 million excess of USD 5 million), on a loss occurrence basis, worldwide. It is placed by AHJ Miller (Alwen Hough Johnson Limited), a Lloyd’s broker with particular strength in marine and Caribbean treaty markets, across a panel of 15 predominantly A-rated international reinsurers, with no single carrier holding more than 15% of the line.

Surety Marine is backed by shareholder’s equity in excess of USD 21 million, with a solvency margin well above the regulatory minimum required by our licence. Full details of our reinsurance security are available on request.

Compliance

All submissions are subject to KYC review, sanctions screening, and compliance review before cover is confirmed.
